Our Mission

Our mission is to provide housing and service options for individuals, with emphasis on serving a diverse population and giving priority to those with limited financial resources and inadequate support systems.

Our vision is promoting the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health of our residents in a warm, caring environment.

We have been a pillar of the community here in Dubuque for over 150 years. It was founded in 1874 as a home for orphaned or abandoned children and needy women. Then in 1877, Attorney Jeffery M. Griffith purchased a home, to provide a permanent location for this charity. In its history, thousands have benefited from the Home. The Board of Directors lobbied for legislature regarding the adoption process. In 1939 a wing for senior retired ladies was added by a bequest made by Mary Lull. The children, staff, and ladies co-existed until the late 1950's when rules required medical staff on hand for the children. The Board of Directors did not want to change the vision to meet the medical requirements; the Home became exclusive for women. In 1986 the Home began to also accommodate men.

Today it’s a warm and well-maintained property that offers independent living in a secure environment. Rent is subsidized by the interest from the donor restricted trust. Rent includes 3 meals a day, housekeeping, laundry, socialization, transportation, and well-being checks. We can accommodate a short-term stay as well as month to month.

Our campus can house 41 residents, four of which are live-in overnight staff. We serve adults, typically seniors, but open to assisting any adult in need.
